Can-Am Recap

In what is starting to become a tradition for the RRAA, we had another excellent showing at this year's Can Am Rugby Tournament.

The women took the field this time around making for a great RRAA outing. The women’s side was comprised of active players, alumni, and a few “visitors”. The women first took on the Ninjas of North Buffalo New York. The Ninjas proved to be too much for the motley RPI side taking the game 31-7. Placed into the consolation bracket the ladies fought hard against Sunday Spewnicorns, but the mythical creatures eventually got the best of the RRAA 17-8. The ladies were super excited to “Play 2 and BBQ”

The men played our brand of RPI Rugby and had great success on the day, the first match, the RRAA Men faced the Springfield Rifles Rugby Club from Central Massachusetts. We set the tempo for the tournament early with a 29-5 victory over the Rifles.

In the second  Men’s match, the RRAA Men faced a fast paced and stout Suffolk Bull Moose Rugby Club from Suffolk County, NY (Long Island), who came out firing on all cylinders and put up ten quick points leaving the score 0-10 in their favor after the first few minutes of the match. The RRAA Men were able recoup and readjust to our opponent and battled back to secure our second victory of the by beating Suffolk Bull Moose 13-10. RPI Alumnus Michael Arthur played a pivotal role in securing a victory in a tightly contested match that came down to the last play and landed us a spot in the playoffs.

In the final match of the tournament, we faced Burlington Men's RFC out of Burlington, Vermont. The RRAA Men fought hard and never gave up against a very skilled Burlington RFC team, but were unable to emerge from the match victorious. The final score of that match was 12-24 in favor of Burlington, who consequently went on to win the Championship match for the Men's Social division.

Man of the Tournament honors were awarded to JoJo Robertson for the forwards and Michael Arthur for the backs. We are already looking forward to another amazing Can Am Rugby Tournament in 2016. Only 362 days away!
